Fat Head Open Final Day

18 Comments on Fat Head Open Final Day

Jimmy came into today needing to pretty much run the table to take the Fat Head Open title.  In the head-to-head competition between us, the score was 11 victories for me, 8 for him.  In the overall competition, it was 11-7 … Christine “Ice Queen” Moore won a round where Jimmy also beat me.

10:50 AM — Jimmy racks up another victory in the head-to-head, although the missus beat us both.  Christine “Ice Queen” Moore set a new personal best at -3, Jimmy even par, Tom +1.

I’d like to claim a share of the credit for Christine’s sudden prowess.  Earlier in the week I noticed she tended to throw the disc using a body turn almost exclusively, without whipping her arm past her body and snapping her wrist toward the target at the end.  I showed her a different grip and suggested that to get that whip-crack acceleration, she should imagine snapping Jimmy’s butt with a towel.  Once she got the hang of it, she picked up at least 20 feet on her drives.

12:35 PM — With only enough daylight for five rounds per day, this was Jimmy’s “Ohio” round … he had to win this one to have any chance at the crown.  The wind picked up and his high shots got blown offline too many times.  My lower shots fared better.  Tom -2, Jimmy +2.  With victory assured, I gave a short speech promising to work with everyone as long as they agree with me.

2:05 PM — We called this one the “Florida” round.  It was neck-and-neck, but ultimately meaningless.  Jimmy +1, Tom +1.

3:10 PM –Tom -3, Jimmy +3, Christine +3.

4:20 PM — So now I’d claimed the crown, Jimmy told me he believes my habit of lagging up to the hole is costing me strokes.  When I’m more than, say, 15-20 feet away from the basket with two strokes to make par, I usually toss my disc at the base to take a safe par instead of risking sailing past and taking a bogey.  Okay, I said, for the final round I’ll aim for the chains every time and keep track of how many extra birdies or bogeys result.  Jimmy was right; I hit three birdies that normally would have been safe pars.  Final round for the week:  Tom -6, Christine even par, Jimmy +3.

So for the final overall victory tally:  Tom 14, Jimmy 8, Christine 4.  That includes one round where Jimmy and Christine tied for the win.

The overall head-to-head, man-to-man, blogger-to-blogger tally:  Tom 14, Jimmy 9.

Christine played 17 of the 29 rounds, choosing to sit out the others to avoid straining her neck.  (She’s had two surgeries on her neck.)  According to the distance measurements on Google Maps, she walked more than 19 miles this week.  Jimmy and I walked a bit more than 32 miles.

Not a bad way to get some fresh air and exercise, and most importantly, we had a blast.  I’ll be sorry to see them leave tomorrow.

Looks like a whole lot of fun, but is this really an Open? Maybe it should be The Fat Head Invitational.

Sure … it was open to everyone I invited.

One of these days, it would be fun to have an actual tournament for local Fat Head fans.

And was there a Pennsylvania round? In which Christine forcibly removed you from the property while Jimmy filled out the rest of the scorecard (and a few more) in his favor?

We elected to skip that one.

So now that you’ve played the bejesus out of it, you plan to rearrange the course for next spring?

Just when I’m getting the hang of it and posted a six under par? No, I plan to enjoy it this way for now.

    Tom,

Sorry about being OT but awhile ago you posted a video of a Dr. who had MS and had significantly recovered from eating and juicing Kale, beets, cabbage and eating a large amount of these vegetables every day. I can’t remember the name of the post and would like to send it to someone. Would you mind giving me a link? Thank you in advance.

    You’re referring to this doctor:

Jimmy Moore had her on a podcast as well:

@Tim. I long ago stopped eating Nutella (at one time, one of my favorite foods) because of the sugar. I might have to go out and buy some to enjoy before they fool around and make it “healthy” with some kind of gross vegetable oil.

I have been enjoying vicariously your games with the Moores. Don’t think I could personally ever be interested in playing the sport, but very much enjoy your enjoyment of it, if that makes sense.

    Thanks for the entertainment!

That does make sense, actually. I never even thought about disc golf until my daughters started playing it on their Wii. I tried that and liked it, so I thought the real thing might be even more fun. It is.
