Offline For Awhile

A truly impressive thunder-and-lightning storm last night blew out our cable service.  A technician will be dropping by on Friday sometime between 8:00 AM and 8:00 PM (so much for the guaranteed two-hour window) to take a look.

So when I leave work today around 5:00, I won’t have internet access until sometime tomorrow.  Just thought I’d mention that, since it means I won’t be able to read or approve comments.

Wait…..you have a regular job?? I thought you spent all day working on blog posts and entertaining and educating us : )

I wish. I went back to full-time software contracting when we bought the farm and I realized how many expensive renovations we were facing.

Before we bought our place in the country we read a book titled, as I recall, “Your Place in Country”.

There were a number of things it failed to caution about. One was being the nearest sink to ground for several miles of REA line and phone cable. Lightning has blasted several modems, a router, any number of switch ports, a garage door opener, a ceiling fan controller, a couple of A/V receivers and probably a few other mysterious appliance failures. We have more stuff on surge protectors now. I’m not sure a whole-house SP would have helped.

Another thing the book failed to warn about was living on a gravel road. Expect to replace a windshield every other year or so due to rocks thrown by opposing traffic, and keep an eye on the body plugs and lines under the vehicles.

We get the power outages, but fortunately the road leading our place is a paved state highway.
