Someone mentioned in the comments section awhile back that if I ever produced another documentary, I should try funding it with a KickStarter campaign. I have to admit, I wasn’t familiar with KickStarter. After looking into it, I love the idea of fans supporting the works they’d like to see produced.
I’m not currently planning another documentary (apart from the companion DVD for our kids’ book), but there’s one in production now that I suspect all you Fat Heads would love. It’s called Cereal Killers. Here’s the trailer:
And here’s an introduction by Donal O’Neill, the producer:
I can tell you from my Fat Head experience that most of expenses involved in getting a film out into the world occur after the shooting stops and the post-production begins. (Until Fat Head went to Netflix and finally drew a wide audience, I thought producing it was going to be the biggest financial mistake of my life.)
Here’s a link to the KickStarter page for Cereal Killers. I just went there and made a donation. I’d urge you to do the same. People who make films like this need and deserve our support.
If you enjoy my posts, please consider a small donation to the Fat Head Kids GoFundMe campaign.
Just send me an address where I can send a donation by money order. I don’t like making payments over the internet.
Oops sorry Tom. That other site doesn’t even allow for comments unless you are a backer. I don’t like registering, signing up with facebook or anything like that. I made a donation to NuSI by mail. So, mailing in payments should also be an option for us old folks.
Checks can and do get lifted out of the mail (my brother used to work for the PO in mail fraud). You probably already know this, but if you’re going to mail a check, take it to the post office. Once your check gets where it’s going, the recipient may deposit it electronically (online) anyway. You can do it at an ATM.
That said, I made a donation as well. (You can register through Facebook, but you don’t have to.)
Thanks for your support Kateryna – let me see if I can find a work around!
I love KickStarter and will be donating for this documentary, if only to ensure it has closed captioning so we can understand them.
Thanks Pauly. We must investigate the CC option.

Done. Just five pounds, but it all counts.
Every little bit helps.
Thank you Nads. That £5 helps a lot and means much more than £!

Made my donation. The more ways we can get this information out there in easily accessible formats like DVD, the better chance I have of convincing my wife of changing her diet.
Indeed. It’s not as if General Mills will support documentaries like this.
The filmmaker Donal O’Neill will be on The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show podcast on Monday, June 17, 2013 sharing about his Kickstarter and CEREAL KILLERS film: http://www.thelivinlowcarbshow.com
Love it jimmy! Can’t wait.
I just linked to it on Google + and Linked In.
I took part in 2 kickstarter campaigns in the last year. It’s incredibly difficult to get people to donate. What a stressful 30 days. Good thing I had bacon as a comfort food, otherwise it would have been straight for the Haagen-Daz.

Just made my pledge – can’t wait to see this film, I hope it gets funded!
Thank you. I hope so too.
Thanks so much Casie. We are working hard to meet our funding goal!

Tom, is Donal O’Neill aware of you and Fat Head? The more of us that can network and share information as well as money, the better and stronger we’ll all be!
Yes, we’ve corresponded briefly.

Tom – many thanks to your good self and everyone on the Fat Head forum here for your backing and support. It is very much appreciated! Let fat be thy medicine 🙂 Donal (Producer, Cereal Killers)
Having been through post-production myself, I know how much work is still ahead of you. I’m looking forward to seeing the final result.
Glad to see you two are aware of each other’s work. It’s good to have Donal on board and trying to spread the message with his own efforts, especially when you see articles like this one in the mainstream media:
http://news.yahoo.com/high-fat-diet-increases-alzheimers-risk-200338071.html
The more we can counter this nonsense the better.
I just wrote about that study for CarbSmart magazine. Stay tuned.
Hello Tom,
I’m the one that suggested the Kickstarter funding to you!
So glad you checked it out and thanks for posting this Cereal Killers link here!
Kickstarter has far bigger possibilities though – both you and Dr William Davis have mentioned the difficulties of getting clinical trials done for testing wheat.
Well, guess what? Kickstarter and similar platforms will be great ways to fund clinical trials too!!
Hope you guys manage to do that, or other interested parties try it out!
There’s so much scope for these projects.
Me, I’m still finding interesting and beneficial effects from going off wheat and am happy I did.
cheers!!
I appreciate the suggestion. Depending on what route we take with our book, we may try one of those campaigns.
Love your work Tim, including the Fat Head movie.
Totally agree with Cereal Killers – It looks awesome, I also backed it and cannot wait to see what Donal has come up with.
Thanks so much Tim. Tom’s work was a great source of information and inspiration during 2 years of research.
Oops typo with your name Tom, too used to typing my own name in LOL. sorry about that.
No offense taken.

Pledged. Look forward to seeing it.
Thank you Tate. Each and every pledge is very much appreciated.

Thanks, Tom – I just made a donation. Donal, I’m looking forward to watching your film! Then I can show it to my students next fall. The kids are very receptive to the information I provide, while the adults in my community tend to be close-minded (but it’s getting better).
Thanks so much Mike! Maybe we can help open some of those minds 🙂

Since you first thought about making your movie the indie filmmakers world has had a pretty big shakeup (the “DSLR revolution”, plus the relentless marching forward of progress with computer hardware and software), I wonder how much it would cost to make Fat Head now?
A whole lot less. But some of the expenses — $7500 just for E & O insurance, which the distributors required me to carry — probably haven’t gone down.
Okay, before anyone asks: Errors and Omissions. Basically, liability insurance in case anyone mentioned in the film sues.
As Tom points out, the major costs are not actually incurred in the filming David – the editing + post production is mired with legal, copyright, finishing and myriad other hidden costs which just keep going up! But once you’re in it, you’re in it so there’s no going back. But we wouldn’t have it any other way around here 🙂
Yeah, I thought I was getting away cheap during the writing/shooting/editing phase. Quite a rude awakening when the post-production costs started piling up.

Just made the pledge, from France! I wonder how many low-carbers and paleo-oriented people there are in my country… I don’t know of any, and the French eat so much bread, especially in the semi-rural area where I live!
Anyway, Good luck to you, Donal!
By the way, are you from Northern Ireland? Your slight accent and the name Donal bring back fond memories of when I spent a year in Derry, some twenty or so years ago.
County Armagh to be exact Raynote! Many thanks for your support – we are touching 90% now with 13 days to go!!
The French also eat a lot of fat, so maybe they are halfway there already…arguably halfway further than most of the western world!

Well, I just contributed 2 pounds.
It all helps.
It certainly does Lyndsey. Thanks so much!
