Guess I’ll be taking a sick day. I knew something was going on when I woke up yesterday, looked at the clock, and realized I’d slept nearly 12 hours. Turns out I had a fever of just over 100, which is actually a three-degree fever for me, since my normal temperature has been 97 since I was a wee lad.
No other symptoms besides the fever … no earache, no runny nose, nothing.
Today the fever crept up over 102 before sliding back a bit. Still no other symptoms except for an occasional cough. This has turned into a bit of an experiment with intermittent fasting, because when I have a fever, my appetite disappears.
So it’s megadoses of vitamins C and D and some rest. Unfortunately, this happens to be the day I have a radio interview scheduled, and I don’t want to cancel on them. I just hope I sound coherent when they call.

Interesting note about “correct” temperature of 98.6 F: The study that established that figure was conducted in Europe. They concluded that average body temperature for humans was about 37 C. No point in going to decimal precision, since there was more than a degree of standard deviation.
Of course when this was reported in the U.S., someone converted 37 C to 98.6 F and we’ve been stuck with it ever since. Come in at 99.5 and someone is going to say you have a fever. My mother has been between 99.5 and 100 her entire life, and every time she tries to give blood they want to turn her away because she’s “sick”.
It never made sense to me that everyone would have the same “normal” temperature. My grandmother (still alive at 93) also runs around 97. Since a slightly lower temperature is associated with a longer lifespan, I’m certainly not worried about it.
Hi Tom,
We’ve had very good luck at our home taking 20,000iu oil based D3 (we use Health Origins brand from iHerb.com) at the first sign of illness. Repeat for 2 days….and it seems to minimize down time markedly.
And the amount of colds since generally supplementing D3 have gone down like 90%. And the ones we still get seem to last less than 1 day. Not like the “olden days”!
FWIW of course!
(and BTW, I like your blog and your posts at TYP….hope to see you back!)
Take good care,
OWP
I tend to shake off infections pretty quickly, especially after supplementing with vitamin D. I hope this is gone tomorrow.
Hope you’re feeling better soon!
Feel better soon Tom!
Maybe you are experiencing human warming. You should eat less carbon.
Could be. I’ve been alternating between feeling hot and feeling cold, which I believe is the definition of global warming these days.
Get better soon! It’s probably all the excitement of your mom visiting, and your latest contract.
I worked some very long hours to finish the software, even while Mom was here. My body may just be insisting on a rest.

Have you been snuggling Jimmy Moore, Tom? Sounds like you’ve caught his lurgy…maybe it’s a computer virus 😉
Get well soon, and I’m sure you’ll be fine on the radio. TV might make you look a bit scary but radio covers a multitude of sins.
Oh, and more anecdotal evidence re D3 here – hubby and I both significantly reduced cold symptoms and length of ‘illness’ by taking ‘snotloads’ (an official measurement btw) of D3 capsules when the cold hit. Thanks for alerting me to that one, and sending me on the research path 🙂
Jimmy is a snuggable guy, but I haven’t seen him since the cruise. I’m taking megadoses of vitamin D, and while I’ve still got a bit of a fever, I’m not noticing any other symptoms.

Thank you.
Summer time colds – no fun dealing with. I’m under the weather also, with similar symptoms, except I have a slight running nose along with the off and on fever. This is my first flu infection since I began supplementing with D3 four years ago. Had a good run. Good luck with your cold. Hope it goes away soon.
Fever was up again this morning, but down this afternoon. I hope I’m getting on top of it.

Yep, sounds just like what Jimmy Moore has right now. Maybe it’s blowin’ around the South and is moving up.
Folks up north best be warned.
Hope you return to your normal self quickly! :>)
The fever is down to about one degree today. I think I’m on the mend, thanks.

Thanks. The fever’s gone, and now it’s just a cough.
