I’ve now completed five weeks of the 6-Week Cure For The Middle-Aged Middle.  I lost three pounds this week, plus another half inch from my waist. 

The only real temptation to cheat came on Friday night, when most of us in the cast of Twelve Angry Men went to a Mexican restaurant after the show.   I had a couple of Negra Modelo beers, but didn’t touch the chips and salsa.  I ordered carne asada and ate the meat, guacamole, sour cream, and a couple spoonfuls of the refried beans.  I skipped the huge mound of rice and the flour tortillas that came with the dinner.

So the results so far:  Started at 205 pounds, 41 inches around the middle.  I’m now at 197 pounds, 37 inches.  I’ve also made excellent progress on the weight machines.  If nothing else, this experiment taught me that whey protein shakes enhance the effects of my workouts.

    Congrats Tom! You are doing really well!

    I’m almost done with my 7th week on this plan. I’ve been alternating between the shake and meat weeks since I have a good little bit to lose yet. As of today down 13.4 lbs. I still haven’t measured, but don’t really need to since my clothes are thankfully getting to be too big for me. That’s all I need to know to be happy.

    That’s a significant weight loss for a woman. I’m with you; I don’t care that much about measurements, but I figured I’d better track one or two for the blog.

    Do you think it’s better to have the protein shake before or after lifting weights?

    I’m drinking them afterwards. I figure the body needs the extra protein to repair the muscle fibers after the workout.

    Depends on whether you are trying to gain or lose weight. Gain, before and after. Lose fat, just after.

    I think we have to remember the diet is “for the middle aged middle” That is most definately where I lost most! I lost a couple of kgs but its that more youthful middle that I’m happiest about. Its almost magical how it worked on a specific area as we all learned that “spot reducing” is impossible – seems it can be done after all.

    Do you personally recommend any one type of whey protein or is there a general rule of what type/ingredients you look for?


    I’ve only tried the one my wife picked up at our local grocery store. It’s called Body Fortress. I just told her to make sure it was low in carbs, and that’s what she found.

    Would the Atkins Low carb or Slimfast low carb shakes count towards this? One of the two are usually on sale each week at Kroger.

    I haven’t checked the nutrient content of those. I get 52 grams of protein in one of my shakes, which probably higher than you’d get from Slimfast shakes.

    Great news Tom!

    Protein Powders… I’ve used Optimum Nutrition’s Chocolate for a long time, over 6 years. In the past, I used it with skim milk until I decided to go low carb last January.

    For breakfast, I now take 2 scoops with 1/2 cup of coconut milk, 1/2 cup of heavy whipping cream and 1/2 cup of whole milk. And it’s delecious!

    I recently added the coconut milk as I’m trying to ‘up’ the saturated fats without the ‘heaviness’ of whipping cream. Before, I was up to 1 1/2 cups every morning and I wasn’t gaining weight.

    I’ve been following you for a while and just ordered your DVD, hopefully it will be as insightful as you are!

    Wow. Great job. I have never heard of the program before, but I am definitely interested now! I’ve already been using whey protein powders after I workout, and have been seeing decent results. Would definitely like to work on the “middle aged middle” I’ve gained over the years a little bit more. For anyone interested, the protein powder I have been using I get online at http://bulkfoodsdirect.com. As I said, I’ve gotten results with this product, but it’s been more overall weight loss/muscle gain. Lost about 10 lbs so far and about an inch around the middle. Hopefully your program could help me lost a couple more of those inches. 🙂

    But the ‘heaviness’ of whipping cream is godly. Get some good grass fed Jersey cow cream and it is yellow and full of awesome.

    But to each their own.

    I hear you, but I was starting to gag at trying to get that much down my throat at one time.

    Besides, Coconut milk is 70% sat fat, so I’m getting nearly as much fat.

    1/2 cup coconut milk = 28.6g FAT
    and medium chain triglycerides (14:0 and 16:0)

    Whereas 1/2 cup of Whipped cream = 44g FAT
    and longer chain triglycerides (16:0 and 18:0)

    Coconut also contains some very beneficial properties (anti-viral and anti-fungal ingredients)

    and I like the taste!

    A lot of people can’t handle that much cream at once. I remember a couple years back when we were having dessert with some people. My fiance started pouring cream on and said “say when”. I just stayed quiet and she called my bluff.

    End result, I ended up downing about half a litre of cream in about 3 minutes in front of some very bewildered friends.

    It was good. The guy from CSPI would probably want me committed (prison or psych ward, both are equally believable).
