It’s been awhile since I’ve posted one of these.  Here are some recent letters from viewers and readers:

You can hardly tell it’s the same person …

I just wanted to write you and thank you your hard work on the movie Fat Head. About a year and a half ago my Type 2 diabetes was terribly out of control and I knew I was cutting my life short. I have a grown daughter but also two younger children and I knew this was not fair to them or my husband.

I watched the movie and decided to start out much like you did. Eating lower carb at fast food places and then gradually eating healthier foods. I have lost over 120 lbs (the first 100 in a year). My life has improved so much. I did it on 1500 calories and day and never over 75 carbs a day, although most days were probably around 40. I watch Fat Head every couple of months and it keeps me motivated. I just wanted to thank you for helping me help myself.


Wow, look at the difference in Linda’s face.  Even without body pictures, you can tell she’s undergone an impressive transformation.  Congratulations, Linda.

54 pounds in five months

I just wanted to thank you — watching your Fat Head movie on Netflix changed my life.   After watching I did a couple months of research and then started a LCHF / Paleo diet.  I’ve lost 54 lbs in 5 months and I’m half way to my goal of 180 lbs.

I really don’t have the words to describe what a positive impact your movie had on my life, so I’ll have to leave it at “thanks!”

Long shifts are easier now

Hi Tom,

First of all thanks for an entertaining and educational movie. Second: please excuse any errors of grammar or punctuation as English isn’t my first language.

I’m writing this on the end of a 25-hour shift – well, to be fair, the worst 25-hour shift I’ve had in my few years as a doctor. I work in cardiology and emergency medicine in Denmark as what would equate to something like chief resident, I guess … we have different titles. The reason for writing is to tell you of the difference in how I feel after the shift today as opposed to how I felt after my shift last week.

Last week’s shift and the shifts before that left me gritty, tired, nauseous, hungry … well, almost hungover. Today I’m sleep deprived as always, but other than that I feel fine.  Guess what changed between the shifts?  That’s right, I went low carb. I used to use carbs and lots of them (sugary drinks, vending machine snacks, etc.) to keep me going while on shift. Also coffee … lots of it.

This shift I caught myself heading towards the vending machines around 3 am after the first 17 hours of what would turn to be the most insane shift I’ve had in terms of patient volume and complexity. Instead of doing what I would usually do, I did what I’ve been doing for 10 days now. I went for the low carb option.  I had a snack consisting of eggs and bacon I managed to rummage up from the kitchen. And today there is none of that hungover feeling and I’m merely having a snooze.

So, once again thanks for an entertaining and informative movie, that has led to a new lifestyle that is already showing its effects.

Thank you for being there for all those patients, Michael.  I know what you mean about being able to power through on a diet of protein and fat.  At one point in making Fat Head, I had to edit for three days around the clock to beat a hard deadline.  I never could have done that when I was living on pasta and cereal.  I would have passed out before finishing.

Inspired to spread the word

Hi Tom,

Thanks so much for your documentary Fat Head and the work you have done to get the word out. It literally changed my life. I went on to educate myself even more, and make sound decisions for myself.

As a result I have lost over 60 lbs after watching your documentary. I am 31 years old and went from 250 to 187. My wife has also lost about the same. Besides the weight we both feel so much better than before. Before we were always tired, I had really high blood pressure, I was often depressed, lethargic, inactive etc. Not only am I 60 lbs lighter, I feel amazing and my blood pressure is better than it has ever been. I feel younger and healthier than ever.

I plan to try to help as many others as I can. I am going to create an online community with videos, PowerPoint slides, links to resources like your documentary, books etc. I plan to create several lesson plans (video/ppt) outlining the facts, the studies etc. And outlining what has worked for me … recipes, where to eat, what to eat, what to avoid. I also hope to create a huge network of people that “get it” and share their stories. The ultimate goal is to allow people to see the facts and make their own decisions based on those facts — and not rely on what the government or media has to say on the subject.

Anyways, I wanted to say thank you and let you know that I hope to change/improve (maybe save) some other people’s lives by presenting the facts and allowing them to decide to change their behaviors based on those facts.  I am not selling this — I am offering it all for free — with the goal of helping others improve their lives like I did.

Newly fit at 41

Tom –

You and your movie have changed my life and my family’s lives.  It has led me and my friends on a quest to become healthier.  Your doc led me to Gary Taubes, Mark Sisson, William Davis, etc, etc.  I’ve been able to lose weight in the past, but never keep it off.  Until now.  I used to weigh 240 lbs while exercising 4 times a week and eating a low-fat diet with a lot of wheat and carbs.

Now, 4 years later, at age 41, I’m 185 lbs, bench pressing 240 lbs.  I’m able to do 3 sets of 12 military pullups.  I can run the 100 yard dash in less than 15 seconds (even though I was never a runner).  Resting heart rate of 49.  Triglycerides at 80!  Blood glucose at 80!  Eating 5 times the fat that I used to.  But, no wheat and no sugar.  I also used to have tight size 38 jeans.  I’m now wearing loose size 30 and had to buy small t shirts when I used to wear XL.

I’ve been buying multiple copies of your DVD for family and friends.  You rock.  Thanks for taking the chance and putting out such an important film.

Husband and wife weight loss


I just wanted to drop a note and say “thanks” for making Fat Head. It was absolutely enlightening and a HUGE help for my wife and I who gained way too much weight after having kids, getting busy and being convinced that fat was bad. We’ve both made great strides in the last 12 months, thanks in part to your film (which was recommended by a nutritionist my wife started seeing).

The change to understanding how our bodies really process food is dramatically changing the way we eat and further accelerating our weight loss and change in lifestyle. I’ve lost over 40 lbs and my wife has lost just over 45 lbs, and we’re still working toward our targets. Thanks again, really appreciate someone working to get the truth out and truly help as opposed to working toward a political objective.


A nutritionist recommended Fat Head?  Now that’s good news.

You, Sir, have changed my life! In 3 months I have lost 32 lbs, my blood pressure meds have been cut in half, and they are soon going away.

It all started with a crappy physical I had in April. My cholesterol was all screwed up and my blood pressure was crazy. I am 30 and it was at 195/95. The doc put me on meds. That was it. I saw your flick and did some research. I was ready to make the switch about a month later.

I started eating no carbs (as far as I could help it), none, zilch. Two months later I went and had my blood tested just to be sure I was on the right track. My cholesterol dropped 45 points and I was 20 lbs lighter. The doctor was floored. We lowered my blood pressure meds and I am hoping with another 10 or so lbs I can fully get off them. I feel like a million bucks.

Now on a side note:  the brainwashing we get in life is amazing. The wife still does not fully buy into the idea that fat is actually good for you. She insists I am nuts … yes, after losing 32lbs.  There is no winning that fight with some people I guess.

A teen drops 36 pounds

I just wanted to drop you a note of thanks. My 15 year old son, Jonathan, watched Fat Head at the beginning of April and since watching it he has lost 36 pounds. He’s gone from 186 to 150. What a gift to have his FIRST attempt at losing weight be so successful.

We have all changed our diets. Thank you SO much for not only the documentary but for your great blog.


I emailed Cynthia to congratulate her son and share my experience of being a fat teen, ashamed to take my shirt off in public, etc.  She wrote back:

Thanks again for your response. Jonathan was such a happy guy when he read the email! And thanks for sharing about your experience as a teen … the last time Jonathan was at the pool he took his shirt off for the first time in six years.

If watching Fat Head helps one teenage boy anywhere in the world lose the weight that made him ashamed to be shirtless in public, I’m a happy man.

    think of all the good you’ve done for so many people. 🙂 i’m tickled that one motivated comedian has done more good in this world than that “serious scientist” Keyes….

    “Fat Head” is a terrific vehicle for the low-carb message! i “made” my daughter watch it recently, and i was delighted that my SIL soon joined us and remained involved to the end!

    This isn’t what I had in mind when I started doing standup comedy all those years ago, but I’m happy where I ended up. Those emails from viewers mean a lot to me.

    What wonderful transformation stories! I love reading these. I also watch your movie regularly (usually on netflix because the hubby takes the DVD on the road with him-he’s an OTR driver) to stay motivated.

    I guess I’ll never really have a story to tell. I’m a 43 year old female, no kids and I have lost weight (from 199.6 size 14 to 154 currently a size 6 working my way back to 130 and a size 3/4 -lots of natural muscle on me). I wish I could say it’s to live longer or improve my health, but it’s not. It’s all vanity for me. I have zero health issues, low RHR, low BP, perfect lab values (save for cholesterol which is a genetically high 308 but such great ratios the doctors never even mention statins). I have always worked out, even at my top weight, but my eating habits were atrocious.

    It’s very hard to stay motivated when even at my heaviest I was too small to qualify for the big stores and never had anyone say anything to me about being fat. I just looked average. BUT-I felt awful-migraines, poor sleep patterns, grouchy/depressed. Since cutting out wheat and cutting carbs down to the 100 range I feel much better. Every once in awhile I slip and pay for it for a few days with fuzzy thinking and a general bad mood. I guess it will always be a struggle, even though I know better!

    Guess I just wanted to say Thank You for getting the message out to more people. Have a great day.

    Sometimes vanity motivates us to make healthier choices. I spent much of my life wishing I’d been born with the can’t-get-fat gene. But in retrospect, I think I probably would have eaten garbage and ended up as a lean but unhealthy guy by this age. My tendency to get fat ended up doing me a favor.

    I think these are great. I actually went low carb after watching the movie about a year ago. Because I married a (half) Sicilian, it’s been a pill to eliminate carbs, especially since neither one of us is fat. But, I have stopped eating cereal and other grains for breakfast as well as nearly eliminated bread and sweets from my diet. I rarely eat any rice and pasta is more of a once or twice a week treat rather than a daily staple. Even those small changes have made a difference. I don’t get grumpy when I’m hungry or the “shakes.” I lost most of my pregnancy weight as well. Thanks for the film. I only wish my mom, who has a weight problem, and my dad, who has high cholesterol, would listen.

    Keep your fingers crossed. It took my in-laws quite awhile to get on board, but they did.

    This is what I really love about this thing of ours. Got on my Mum’s scales today having known I’d lost a bit of weight and found that since the last time I stepped on, 11 lbs were gone!! Despite me eating some really fatty pork and lamb and my favourite Blue Cheese Leeks as a side…. Going back to Venice, Italy next year, and totally not worried about the swimsuit dilemma. A little worried that I’ll be far too small to fit in my summer stuff, buy hey ho what a problem to have!! Need to find a tutorial on taking in linen trousers… comeone Youtube/Pinterest…. 🙂

    I can’t help you with the sewing, but yes, it’s a good problem to have.

    I can relate to that last story… I still don’t like to take my shirt off at the beach or in public pools… and I’ve already lost around 45 pounds.

    I still haven’t gotten over that either, even though I know I’m not that guy anymore. I’m afraid the fear became hard-wired over so many years.

    I lost weight on couple occasions during my life before, but I don’t remember a diet ever resulted in such big health improvements as I have from LCarbing now. I can’t get used to that miracle. I wish I started earlier on a LC road.

    I wish I’d started at age 13 when I started getting fat.

    Hello and greetings from Sweden Tom! Me and my girlfriend watched FatHead a few days ago and I want to thank you. We loved your humour and we loved seeing that pretentious, annoying Morgan Spurlock-guy get his ass handed to him. I remember when “Supersize Me” premiered here, the critics and intellectuals raved about it like if he was some kind of genius. My gf is kind of a “lefty”, but your movie and your clear logic really made an impression on her, I could tell. I can’t thank you enough for that, really! I’m recommending your movie to everyone, and same goes for your lecture on science for smart people.
    Another thing… A few weeks ago I finished “The Meat Fix” which you recommended and I loved it! I’ve noticed we also share opinion about “Economics in one lesson”, it’s one of my favourites.
    Now, do you think you could someday make a list of books that you really recommend/changed your life? I and many others would be very grateful. You don’t even have to describe them, a short list would be better than nothing.

    That would make for an interesting project. I’ll think on that one. I probably read books decades ago that made a difference at the time but I’ve since forgotten.

    Happy to see the 15 year old regain his self confidence and self esteem. I love all the other results, too, but that’s an age where permanent damage can be done to a person’s psyche. I know too many people who, no matter how much weight they lose still see a fat person in the mirror.

    I’d probably have to get down to 10% body fat before I’d look in a mirror and not see shades of my fat-adolescent body.

    So many of us owe you a debt of gratitude Tom. I can’t help but smile as I think back to that day I decided to watch what I expected to be a comedy oriented movie taking the starch of out yet another politically motivated blowhard. As it turned out your movie was indeed funny but also had a brilliantly simple and very logical story to tell. I still have some work to do before I send that thank you e-mail but rest assured one is in the works.

    Congratulations to Linda, Jason, Michael, Kerry, J, Art, Cynthia and Chad!

    The letter I would write Tom would be just as grateful, but with a different perspective. I used LCHF to control my weight for 6 years before watching Fat Head. It gave me a simple way to show my friends and family (who have swallowed the Pyramid hook, line and sinker) what I was talking about and why it worked. I’ve even gotten a couple converts!

    Tom, I’m starting to feel sorry for the the thin or “normal” people who eat the SAD. Most of us come to LCHF to lose weight and then morph into realizing that it’s about improved health. Those normal people really are in grave danger of developing chronic illness as they have no signs of being in poor health (overweight). How many thin people do we have to lose to sudden heart attacks and T2D before medicine wakes up?

    Congrats to all. I’m almost done myself, but will never be done with this WOE and am committed to doing everything possible to help spread the word!!
    down 67 since 4/11/11 and dropped 5 out of 5 drugs!!! (278-211) When I get there I will send pics.

    I’m ambivalent about this thread. While these testimonials literally moist my eyes, I’m raging mad at every creeping idiot that tries to discourage LC.

    Well, let’s focus on the positive. I’ve received enough emails these like these that I find the creeping idiots laughable.

    I completely understand Chad’s testimonial. I’ve lost 50 pounds. My blood sugar and my blood pressure have come down (110/74 this morning!), but I still can’t convince my husband to climb on the bandwagon. He’s lost 15 pounds just by default, since I’m the one who does most of the cooking, but he just doesn’t believe fat is good for you. He’s watched the movie, and he tried low carb for about a week, but that was all he would do. Oh, well. I don’t know what else to do.

    If he’s not ready, he’s not ready.

    I’m happy for all of them, but particularly, so happy for that teen, too. Wish any of the LC stuff had been around and accessible when I was a teen – then I wouldn’t have started on the low fat diets that ultimately made me *gain* 75lbs over my already high teen weight so that I was 250lbs by the time I was in my mid-twenties, with a totally screwed metabolism. Even with low-carbing, when I found it at the age of 28, it took me 3 years to lose that weight, and although I kept it off for 4 more years, when I got pregnant the 30lbs I gained proved impossible to get off (even though I still eat low-carb). I’m sure if I hadn’t screwed up my system with years of low-fat diet attempts I wouldn’t be having such a hard time now.

    I was already a convert when I was pointed to Fathead – I think by Dr. Eades’ blog – but it has certainly proved useful in convincing a few others to go low-carb…

    I wish I’d known about low-carb when I was an adolescent as well. I got fat on low-fat cereals.

    I have been drinking full fat milk and using light cream in everything from protein shakes to cereal, these are how my numbers have changed my triglycerides dropped from 274 to 163, my HDL went from 40 to 51 and my LDL went from 87 to 93 which is pretty small and my total cholesterol is 177 from 182, I am sticking with my saturated fat diet, it also makes it easier to stay away from the carbs. Everything improved except LDL, but with the range of measurement that isn’t even an issue. My Triglycerides have not been below 250 for the last 15 years. My doctor was in shock with the results.
